Year 1/2

Students in Years 1/2 continue to strengthen their literacy and numeracy skills while developing independence and confidence as learners. Students in year 1/2 take part in daily one hour phonics plus lessons which help to develop sounding, segmenting, handwriting and reading skills. Learning experiences encourage curiosity, creativity and problem-solving across all curriculum areas. Students engage in hands-on investigations, collaborative activities during inquiry units and specialist subjects that support their academic, social and emotional growth. Auslan lessons are conducted weekly in association with Auslan Education Services. Lessons are linked to the Victorian curriculum 2.0.

The 1/2 unit is comprised of composite classes with students from grades 3-4. There are opportunities for cross-age and peer tutoring, shared and team teaching.

The composition of the grades at our school are arranged:

  • So that children can be placed in grades which are appropriate to their academic and social development.
  • The range of abilities that are spread across a composite grade are very similar to those of a single age grade. Teachers provide a program to cater for the individual children’s needs no matter what grade they are in.
  • To provide greater flexibility in matching the needs of the child with their teacher and other groups.
  • To provide the flexibility in placing children from other educational settings into the most appropriate grade-this is important given the number of children transferring in and out of the school
