Year 3/4

Students in Years 3/4 build on their literacy and numeracy skills while applying their learning across a broad range of curriculum areas. Students take part in weekly Maths scaffolding where they can improve their skills. During reading and writing students are exposed and experiment with a range of writing and reading genres. Students are encouraged to think critically, work collaboratively and develop independence through inquiry-based learning and real-world problem-solving. Opportunities to use digital technologies and participate in specialist programs further enrich learning experiences. Auslan lessons are conducted weekly in association with Auslan Education Services. Lessons are linked to the Victorian curriculum 2.0.

The 3/4 unit is comprised of composite classes with students from grades 3-4. There are opportunities for cross-age and peer tutoring, shared and team teaching.

The composition of the grades at our school are arranged:

  • So that children can be placed in grades which are appropriate to their academic and social development.
  • The range of abilities that are spread across a composite grade are very similar to those of a single age grade. Teachers provide a program to cater for the individual children’s needs no matter what grade they are in.
  • To provide greater flexibility in matching the needs of the child with their teacher and other groups.
  • To provide the flexibility in placing children from other educational settings into the most appropriate grade- this is important given the number of children transferring in and out of the school
